The premise

Sometimes the strongest conclusion is that the available record is insufficient. We make the reasoning visible. A considered editorial note should show how a source leads to a limited conclusion, including the alternative explanation that has not been ruled out.

Test the inference

A review template can pressure an author into producing a verdict anyway. Write out the supported premise and the conclusion separately. Ask whether another explanation is still possible and whether the wording goes beyond the source. The resulting note may be narrower than the original headline, which is a useful editorial result rather than a failure.

Frame a limited conclusion

Publish the boundary of knowledge as part of the result. Keep the question, the source reference and the remaining limitation together so that a later reader can reconstruct the reasoning.
